6/15/08 Napa, CA

The first day!!! The first day took forever to start. All us cyclists huddled together like penguins to keep warm outside the Golden Gate Bridge. A few brave parents ate breakfast with us outside and were as excited as we were to get started. We rode slowly over the Bridge in a long paceline, unable to see more than 100 yards in all directions through the heavy white fog. Looking up to the top of the bridge I was unable to see anything, nor could I see water or street ahead of me. It was very surreal, eerie and fake, but really cool. We broke into smaller groups on the other side of the bridge but they rearranged several times throughout the trip. We went through some neat towns and deserted brown hills with green shrubbery. I was able to finish with a front group at our Best Western.

Our friendship visit was great. I had a long talk with Steven by the pool about basically everything, especially Kung Fu Panda and how he was going to get that game when it came out. The twin brothers Ty and Randy were a couple of tricksters! They kept poking people and then turning away, pretending it wasn’t them . They would call each other hilariously random names like ketchup and toilet water and mermaid, and they would be shocked at each and every attack, like it was the most genius or outrageous insult ever. We ate a BBQ with them that was generously sponsored by the Napa Valley Softball League, which gave out awards to the all the athletes at the end. This is where Steve Golden became “Screech” (he looks exactly like the Saved By the Bell guy) and Pace became “fridge.”
