We had a pretty easy ride today, mostly flat but the ride to lunch was a very gradual climb that took awhile to top. The people who welcomed us to lunch were the happiest to see us of our hosts so far. Apparently we had been coming there for 20 years. The town wasn’t much, but the people sure were. They were a branch of the ARC, a group which I have been impressed with so far. There was this one small old man with down syndrome and a fake clown nose that challenged us and beat us all at arm wrestling. It was funny watching him be all macho, blowing up his guns and flexing. A lot of trash talking was laid down between him and a big guy with lots of special Olympic medals. Again, there was a girl, Karla, who would poke someone and hide.
Lodging was at Argonaut HS and dinner at Mel & Faye’s Dinner, sponsored by the Jackson Lion’s club, which seemed to me to essentially be a fraternity for old men. We wolfed down a great spaghetti dinner and got some tips from a cool guy named Mike about the rough ride up Kirkwood Mountain tomorrow. It would be one of the hardest rides of JOH. Mike shared good advice about taking our time, being safe, and riding within our limits. Tomorrow would be tough.
