Whoooooooo what a day! I spent about 11 hours in the saddle. We had to climb Kirkwood Mountain before we could sleep. The ascent went like stairs, up a lot, down a little, up a lot, down a little until we reached the peak. We started at an elevation of about 1200 feet and ended roughly at 8200. IT was mentally tiring, and physically. My legs and neck were killing me. The views, however, were spectacular. Being on top of a mountain, we were able to over look hills, snow-caped ranges, slates of gray rock and tall pines, it was awesome. We also passed Caples Lake, whaich had some of the bluest water I’ve ever seen.
A long, wicked descent shot us down Kirkwood into Markleeville. 10-20 miles of pure speed coasting, grabbing the breaks and still making almost 40 mph. The twists and turns helped me to play it safe. An enormous amount of pizza awaited us at a campsite dining hall, provided by some Pi Alphas. Today’s beginning was gruesome, and the end was intense, but it was an unbelievable day. PS: Pace does a dead on Matt Foley impression from SNL. Look it up.
